The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (ECEACA) of the European Commission has awarded the master in Renewable Energy in the Marine Environment (REM) an excellent grade of 90 out of 100. Therefore, it renews the “Good Practice Flag” in the second consecutive year and it stays at the top level of excellence in the international higher education community.
In the assessment, the maximum representatives in charge of the quality assurance of the Erasmus Mundus Master Program praise the appropriate implementation of the quantitative and qualitative activities of these postgraduate studies.
The European Agency has underlined both the technical level of the lecturers and the employability offered to their graduates. In addition, the institution stands out the quality of the curriculum, which is externally recognized by the high student application rate (over 400) and the origin of the applicants (67 countries).
Regarding the budgetary management, the report highlights the different alternatives for funding offered to the students, and the financing guarantees that assure the continuity of the project.
Finally yet importantly, the Agency assesses very positively the use of new technologies applied in the diffusion and promotion of the master studies.
“Erasmus Mundus”, excellence in Higher Education
The master in Renewable Energy in the Marine Environment (REM) is a postgraduate program that has been awarded the quality flag by the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) Programme. The studies have been developing jointly for 2 years now by four European Universities: the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), the University of Strathclyde (Scotland), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Norway), and the École Centrale de Nantes (France).
These master studies are coordinated by Prof. Jesús María Blanco of the Nuclear Engineering and Fluid Mechanics Department in the Faculty of Engineering of Bilbao. The program begun in 2017 as a particular Postgraduate Certificate of the UPV/EHU. As Prof. Blanco explains “from the starting point, our objective was to obtain the Erasmus Mundus award being aware of the involved difficulties and the need of compromise of the teaching faculty”. The Professor acknowledges the great challenge and success of having achieved it “on the first attempt”.
Promoted by the European Commission, the Erasmus Mundus Programme is an education plan developed by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (ECEACA) with the aim of empowering the quality of the European Higher Education System. Among its fundamental actions it is the help to joint programs of master and doctorate that have passed the academic excellence evaluation process, from which only the most privileged ones obtain public financing from the European Commission.
